MEMORANDUM

To:                   Department Heads, And Graduate Directors
From:               Linda Lacey, Dean of the Graduate School
Re:                   Diversity Graduate Assistantships for an academic year

To help departments increase diversity at the graduate level, the Graduate School will offer competitive graduate assistantships to help recruit new students.   Please note that the slots are now for an academic year.  Departments will need to commit funds to the selected students for at least one additional semester, or preferably a year.   The student must be an American citizen for this award.

To apply for an assistantship, departments must submit the following:

  1. A statement (one page or less) on how the student will increase diversity in the program,
  2. A recruitment plan that discusses successful recruitment strategies, and
  3. A written statement indicating how the student will be supported the following semester or preferably a year(s).

Please note that the selected student must be admitted to the department prior to applying for the diversity award.

The diversity graduate assistantships are a regular activity of the Graduate School.  The slots will be allocated to departments on a competitive basis to help increase the diversity and quality of the student body.   Matching support is required to win one of these awards for your student.

The Graduate School will accept applications from departments through April 1st.  Awards will be made as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, please email me at:  lacey@nmsu.edu.  If you have an outstanding student that you need to recruit prior to April 1st, please nominate the student immediately.
