About Fellowships, Grants and Assistantships |
| Fellowships Awards granted for graduate or post graduate-level research and/or education that does not require repayment. Fellowship sources include private foundations as well as government agencies. Grants Includes support for research, travel, and creative, experimental, or innovative projects. Grant sources include private foundations as well as government agencies. Check with your department and college about the availability of matching funds. Many NMSU departments and colleges make grants available to graduate students to help with travel expenses and scholarly activities. Assistantships The assistantship, designed in the nature of an internship, is a learning experience facilitating the completion of degree requirements. It helps the student to acquire practical and professional experience related to a degree program and to prepare for a professional career. Graduate assistantships in teaching and research are available to selected students in those fields in which graduate degrees are offered, as well as in some other offices of the university. Teaching assistantships are funded by state dollars while research assistantships are funded by grants. Check with your department for details about assistantships. Some departments do not offer graduate degrees but may have funding to offer graduate assistantships. These have included the Center for Learning Assistance, the Women's Studies Program, Dona Ana Branch Community College, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Physical Education Department, and the Computing Research Laboratory. Eligibility for graduate assistantships includes (a) acceptance by and subsequent registration in the Graduate School and department, (b) classification as a "regular" graduate student, and (c) a continuing 3.0 grade-point average in all graduate work. International Students and Teaching Assistantships All international students receiving a teaching assistantship must demonstrate proficiency in English and competency in pedagogy. Prior to the first semester in which the teaching assistantship is received, international students must undergo the NMSU International Teaching Assistant (ITA) screening administered by the Communications Studies Department on behalf of the Graduate School. International graduate students wishing to hold a teaching assistantship should check with their department to determine when they should arrive on campus to meet the screening requirement. |
